Oooo I remember the days when I was AIM and would go onto messageboards (in my case to discuss HP, I won't mention my first terrible fandom).
It's really interesting to hear about your Merlin experience because it's somewhat different from mine. I have complicated feelings about the show itself--I didn't become fannish until I stumbled upon the fandom and it was around the time of end of the 4th season.
