Day 26 - OMG WTF? Season finale

Merlin season 4 finale, "The Sword in the Stone, Part 2." Just like the fifth series finale, I really liked this episode up until the end. Unlike a lot of people, I really didn't have a huge problem with Merlin assisting Arthur getting the sword out. Though it was indicitive of a huge problem, that continued right up until the end of not really letting Arthur having his own real victories. But what I really hated about the ending was after basically a season long wait, we finally get a Morgana/Arthur confrontation and it lasts for 2.5 seconds. Then we have Arthur deciding to forgive Gwen (and yes the audience knew she wasn't really guilty) for cheating because some chick he barely knew died. Yes, it was very, very sad but it was stupid, cheap reasoning to resolve the Gwen/Arthur plot. The ending was severely rushed. All that melodrama and Isolde dies, Arthur proposes, and Gwen's being coronated in the blink of an eye. And then they put the cherry on the cake of WTFery by having Aithusa randomly saving Morgana. And *SPOILER ALERT for season 5* if you were expecting that plot to be explained, it never really is the next season.

Day 27 - Best pilot episode

I think I'll go with Once Upon A Time. I was basically intrigued by the premise immediately, but the first episode grabbed me immediately and I found the whole story fascinating and really liked some of the characters and wanted to know what was going to happen next. I find it immensely re-watchable.

Day 28 - First TV show obsession

ABC Daytime soaps All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital. My mom used to watch her shows all the time, and of course as a little kid I wasn't interested, but had to watch it sometimes with her. One day, I was about five or six, I just really started paying attention and being really intrigued when this lady, I think I'm remembering it right, got trapped in a shower. After that I started actually watching it with her and have never really stopped. I would always watch them off and on because of school, and we didn't have a VCR yet. I think the first time I truly became obsessed with it was when I was a pre-teen and there was this teen couple Brian and Hayley on AMC that I just fell for. I thought he was the cutest guy ever. I rushed home from school to try and catch their episodes.

Day 29 - Current TV show obsession
Day 30 - Saddest character death.

AITHUSA WAS SO POINTLESS! The ONLY reason Aithusa was even EVER necessary was to breathe on Mordred's fucking sword. Like, there was SO MUCH POTENTIAL but the writers basically forgot about it, dude. They had to. The never explained ANYTHING about Aithusa and Morgana or any of that crap. Seriously, was it even necessary to put Aithusa in there? Couldn't they just randomly have Morgana FIND a sword someone had got a dragon to breathe fire on in the past and save all that CG?

I know! It really was ridiculous that they introduced Aithusa, and made her seem so important, and I guess she does play an important role but still, to not use her after Merlin was so emotional after she was born was really stupid and short-sighted.

This comment is spoilery for Season 5!

Here's what I try to remind myself about Isolde dying. Even though it was a total cheap move to try to resolve the Arthur/Gwen plot they had totally messed up, in the context of 5.13, it's sort of redeemed. Arthur watches Isolde die in the arms of the person she loves, who loves her, and she tells Tristan, "Hold me." And in the end, all he wants is for Merlin to hold him. Because he learned from Isolde that the best way to die is in the arms of the person most precious to you, the one person you trust to care for you above all things. "Just hold me. Please." I MEAN GODDDDD! ;______;

The utter lack of Aithusa's relevance in the series PISSES ME OFF TO NO END! Why did they even bring him into the show if they weren't going to do anything with it? Ugh. And Merlin would have to be so MFing ooc to bring a creature into this world as a fucking dragonlord and never check in on it. And then when he SEES THAT THE POOR BB IS ALL INJURED, he never summons him and tries to help him? Never confronts Kilgharrah about WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HIM HE WAS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! Stupid show. Stupid writers. This is why we have fan fiction.

I owe [livejournal.com profile] nu_breed's recent 4.13 rewatch recap post for reminding me of Isolde's death. But HOLY CRAP I KNOW! Like, we see in 4.13 that Arthur reacts strongly to watching her die, so I honestly think we're meant to see the similarity between her death and Arthur's. (Oh, no, I just said Arthur died and gave myself a sad...)

I just have to think of the words "Arthur" and "dead" together and I get sad.

That is a really excellent and beautiful way of looking at the scene. Now I'm kind of saf all over again.

It's like the writers got all excited about the thouhht of a new dragon and wrote it with no idea what to really do with it. But then they thought it looked really cool.

"Wow, Aithusa looks great. We definitely need to bring her back again."

"But how?"

*shrugs shoulders*

*snaps fingers* "I know maybe she rescues Morgana at the end of series 4."

*gets really excited* "Yes! Now, Morgana has a dragon just like Merlin does. Isn't the symmetry fantastic?"

*nods* "Hmm, but why would Aithusa help Morgana?"

*shrugs*

"Eh, I guess we'll figure it out later."

I completely agree with your assessment on the series 4 finale. I basically just threw up my hands in defeat when it was over. You'd think after marathoning 3.5 series very rapidly in autumn 2011 in order to catch up with series four as it was nearing the end I'd be accustomed to the writers' awful tendency to only half-(or not at all) explain their own plot points. Not to mention their tendency to rush through resolution. But the series four finale pissed me off, and it capped off what I considered to be a very lacklustre back half of the series.

I did something similar before series 4 aired here in America. I hadn't really watched the third series because I'd heard some bad things about it. But I heard and saw some clips from series 4 and got excited about the show again. So I did a marathon of the whole show. I think their lack of follow through and resolution was really at its worst in series 4. And yet somehow that's still my favorite series.
