Seeking the Right Tune

Mike and I are on the search for our first dance music and music for our reception. It's probably something we don't have to worry about too much right now, but we're trying to pick a DJ, and it's actually something fun for the wedding that we can do. It's also kind of an interesting look into Mike's brain as he vetoes songs for a variety of reasons. Some of the reasons make sense and some are hilarious.
He's kind of like Goldilocks, some of the songs are too fast paced for him and then he says some are way too slow. One song I was kind of keen on that he partially vetoed was Lifehouse's "Everything." Though I get his objections on it. The song starts out really slow and then gets really fast towards the end. He said it wouldn't be good for the reception and he's on the fence, close to saying no to it as a first dance.
When we first started dating and we talked about wedding music, there were two songs he really was interested in using. One was David Bowie's "As the World Falls Down" from Labyrinth and Ozzie Osbourne's "Lay Your World on Me." When he got engaged he never mentioned the David Bowie song again, but he is still really interested in the Ozzie song. It's a power ballad and the lyrics work. I have no really objection to it. Like him I like the idea that it's not a song that is traditionally chosen for a first dance. But there are probably other songs I like better. Thankfully, there are others that he's taken a liking to.
We also ended up really liking Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us." We also listened to Barry White's "You're the First, My Last, My Everything." He said that it's got the right tempo, the lyrics work, and "you can never go wrong with Barry."
Mike is a big reggae fan and wants some of those songs included. I really love the Big Mountain song "Baby, I Love Your Way." Even though he likes reggae, I didn't think he'd go for it. But when I suggested it, he really liked the idea. I've started to really like the idea, too. I think it would be a unique choice.
I suggested "You're the One That I Want" from Grease. That was met with a resounding no. Turns out that he is not a big fan of the movie. He said the only way we could play that song is if he got really, really, really drunk and he was not expecting to get the level of drunk required for the song. Another song he said he would have to get drunk to use was Mr. Big's "To Be With You." He said he could only imagine getting drunk and doing the Ray Charles dance to that song (for some strange reason.) But he did say that he could get that level of drunk at the wedding.
I suggested Madonna's "True Blue" which I really love. He said it would be okay for the reception, but not for the dance. When I asked why he said it was too bubble gum pop-like. When I suggested The Ronette's "Be My Baby" he said the same thing. When I said how could that be since it was from the 50's or 60's he said that it must be where bubble gum pop originated from. LOL.
I wasn't upset, but I hated that he automatically vetoed Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You." That was an automatic veto. He didn't even let it play for more than ten seconds. He also vetoed Grouplove's "Tongue Tied." I thought it was a great fast paced party song, but to my surprise he said it was too slow and, when I pressed him, he said he just didn't envision it playing at a wedding. I LOL at his reason for vetoing Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby." We were listening to it for a while and he was thinking about it and then suddenly said no. When I asked why he said that the lyrics were too sad since it's about a guy leaving the woman. I pointed out that the guy comes back, but he laughed and said the guy shouldn't have left in the first place.
Mike likes rap, too. I also enjoy rap, though not really modern rap, but a lot of rap from the 80's and 90's. But Mike said we have to be careful because there will be kids at the wedding. Which I definitely get. We'd definitely have to play the clean version of songs. I also suggested Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man" and "Candyman." He liked ANOM for the reception, but wasn't sure because she says "ass" a few times, but I think "eh, the kids can stand hearing the word ass for a little bit" if they'd even be paying attention. "Candyman" was more problematic because she talks a lot about cherries popping and guys with real big cocks so...yeah...might have to not go with that one.
Mike vetoed Aerosmith's "Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" because he said it was overplayed as a wedding song, which I agreed with. He said no to Oasis' "Talk Tonight" for the first dance because he didn't like how they repeatedly repeat a phrase over and over in the song. Though funnily enough directly after that, I played Paramore's "The Only Exception" which also repeats that phrase several times, but he was okay with it. I was surprised he said yes to it cause I wasn't sure it was his kind of song. I was also surprised that he He also said yes, at least to putting it as a possibility for the first dance, to Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years." It probably helps that I didn't play the whole thing or tell him it was from a Twilight movie. I kind of like the idea of that one because I closely identify it with Merlin/Arthur because it's perfect for them, and is used in so many fanvids for them. Then again I don't want to cry about Arthur's death during my first dance.

Date: 2014-09-21 03:58 am (UTC)Thankfully, even though we don't always see eye to eye, Mike and I communicate a lot and I always try to get his opinions on things since it's his wedding, too. Though sometimes I regret that and wish I just did whatever I wanted. :)
Thanks.

Date: 2014-09-21 04:06 am (UTC)Sounds really nice. I like a modern version of that song by Lauryn Hill. Mike didn't think it would work as a first dance, but I'm thinking of using it as the song playing when I walk down the aisle.
